The Spring Playbook for Largemouths
Spring offers early season largemouth opportunities and a bevy of shallow water action. Largemouths awaken quickly from their winter dormancies to feed heavily in preparation for their impending spawn. At fisheries they’ve been dialed in, their whereabouts and behavioral tendencies can be predictable. April and May will be the best two months to try for yourself. With the proper lure selection in play, you’ll be able to cover each of the habitats and likely locations largemouths are utilizing, and even be able to match the strategy according to their behavior.
Location - Like a Broken Record
Prioritizing location first, largemouths are seeking the warmest waters they can find for feeding and pre-spawn preparations. Their movements from wintering areas to the shallows are rapid. Sunlight is a major motivator for all spring activity. My favorite spring season largemouth fisheries are drainage lakes, backwaters, shallow eutrophic lakes, and my local neighborhood ponds near home.
