Northwoods Bass Fishing Report – Mid June 2023
Bass have spawned long ago. The water temps are getting both high and low. The mayflies are hatching. And I finally got my boat back with new motor install done! What's there not to like about middle of June fishing? I recently put some significant fishing time in, finally. And did some trips too! Fishing for smallmouths has been above average lately, and we haven't seen much of a post-spawn lull of them laying low like seasons prior. Not sure if the early and rapid spawn from a few weeks ago had something to do with it? Or if the fish themselves are simply hungry. Spawn was quick this year. Smallmouths, largemouths, crappies and bluegills each did their business in the past few weeks. Many of the smallmouths captured last week were in very poor body condition: Beaten up; Sores; Injury from rough sex; Hook injuries. They've been caught a lot and repeatedly. I also ran into a fair share of dead fish too, most small but some big. I KNOW this pressure during a time of vulnerability is unsustainable. Some people out there just need to look into a mirror to see their actions and stop. Last week, we saw the surface temps drop from 72 degrees to 64
