Northwoods Bass Fishing Report – Mid August 2023
Finally checking in with a report for the first time in three weeks!
My favorite fishing partner (Mrs. Ragas) and I just concluded annual vacation week. We jumped a bunch of lakes over the last week. While we (she mostly!) made it look easy, the fishing was pretty challenging each day. We got lucky with some windows, weather changes, and cooler water temps that pushed and kept fish shallow each afternoon. Each day included an hour or two of nothing too.
Some days were bass-only, other days were mixed bag and other species. We caught a lot, adventured to places, succeeded a lot, and struggled too.
The largemouth department has been brutal up to this point, but we finally hit some 20”s for the first time all year, with both specimens coming from deep weed edges (a 20.5 on 4-inch Z-man Diezel Minnow; a 20 on Freedom Tackle dbl. willow spinnerbait).
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ragas caught herself a new PB smallmouth @ 20.5" plus a few other 19-20's class fish working a tube all week.
Water temps going from 72-75, and fish are coming from all over the place - shallow and deep. Temps will likely rise yet again this week as a warm weekend is
