Northwoods Bass Fishing Report – Early May 2024
It's an excellent feeling to be pursuing and casting for smallmouths once again! For the remainder of this month and the limited time I will have through May 20th, my boat will be targeting them exclusively unless a junk weather day or repeat of last week necessitates having to return to largemouths.
Opener weekend has come and gone. Good fishing was had, despite the junky weather. I spent most of my weekend targeting walleyes like most other people in Wisconsin. While we didn't catch tons of them, we caught very nice quality fish that included a 27-incher and 28-incher.
All walleyes are now in post-spawn, and were being caught atop sand flats and gravel edges in 5 to 10-foot depths. 4-inch Z-Man Diezel Minnowz rigged on 1/4 ounce Northland Slurp heads are my go-to. Not a single fish was caught on a live minnow.

Walleyes will remain shallower these next few weeks, and good fishing for them will remain.
