Faux summer this week has the fish woken up and hungry.  A few of you saw my post from last night on my Facebook page. Here’s a recap of yesterday’s great outing.
Depending on where in the Midwest you live, the arrival of spring varies. The season can begin as early as late February. In most regions, not until mid-March through early April. And in the far northern states, early to mid-May. It all depends on the arrival of warming weather and the progression of ice-melt.
For spring smallmouths, suspending jerkbaits have become staples for most anglers. Nearly everyone has one, or a few, rigged up on deck. They are the ticket to early spring success. Few other baits can catch early spring smallmouths better. While many of them catch fish immediately out from the package, some can require simple
If you’ve fished swim jigs, you might have been overwhelmed by the numerous trailer options that are now available. Besides the jig, trailers make up the other half of the package. In my opinion, this tends to become more technical than jig selection itself.
The traditional ned rig has ruined fishing for reasons I refuse to comment on. It falls into the same category as the drop shot, my least favorite method of fishing.
Angus MacGyver is one of television history’s most legendary characters. Not only is he a cult hero who came to fame in the mid-1980’s, but a name that is also a part of American vocabulary. MacGyver was instantly iconic because of his talent for invention, adaptation, and improvisation.
When I taught myself to smallmouth fish nearly 20 years ago, I learned my ways with the Yum Craw Bug. It caught some of my best smallmouth early on in my career on lakes, rivers and flowages. Then for a long time, it went on a retirement for me.

Hair Jigs You Need

The first time I saw this hair jig in use, I was mind-blown. It out-fished every other hair jig I had in my boat.

Ten Rods for Ten More Bass Jobs

Guide customers and readers often wonder how many rods I have. Admittedly I lose count, and you can’t have enough. Most days of the week, I am carrying over 30 St. Croix Rods in my Ranger – between the decks and storage locker.
