Dynamic Lures Suspending Jerkbaits
Dynamic Lures was created to develop more user-friendly fishing lures and tackle, and place emphasis on highest quality at the lowest price. Owned and operated by Brian Alano, of Grand Junction, CO, Dynamic Lures entered the fishing industry with the sole intent to revolutionize fishing and outdoor products as we currently know them.
I began religiously using Dynamic Lures products in spring 2014 and the results to date have been stellar with their variety of crankbaits and jerkbaits designed for the bass and walleye fishing we do.
The J-Spec
The Dynamic Lures J-Spec is the Ultimate 3 inch jerkbait. Retailing at $7.95, this stunning lure is the prime example of innovation. The J Spec proves its versatility as an extreme action suspending jerkbait. Professionally designed with an action and feel that has been tested extensively, its unique size and shape produce an erratic action that triggers aggressive bites. With great suspending action the J-Spec is a great choice to use when targeting smallmouth bass who are suspending and staging for spawn. The J Spec suspending jerkbait rivals the best suspending hard baits on the market today.
From Alano’s color options, my favorites are Ghost Fish, Cutthroat, Yellow Perch, Clown, and Goby. I typically work the J Spec on 7 foot medium heavy action spinning rods and reels with 8 lb monofilament with sharp tugs. The aggressiveness of each jerk and the length of the pause between them varies largely by water temperature and by the stage of any weather front pushing through. Cool water temperatures and post-frontal conditions call for a very slow approach while actively feeding smallmouths and warm water situations demand aggressive techniques.

Because water temperatures are still on the cold side, I am slow with my approach. The J-Spec is irresistible on a long pause in cold water. Instead of jerking, give them more subtle pulls to achieve depth. I’ll wait patiently in between pulls if necessary, upwards of 30 seconds. Rip downward to push it deeper.
The Z-Spec
In 2021 and 2022, we worked on a larger 4-inch model called the Z-Spec, which finally hit the market in late-2022. I discuss its differences, applications, and when you should be fishing these 4-inch models. The Z-Spec retails for $8.99
This 4-inch Jerkbait was a design requested by many of our customers. For years our followers wanted a larger version of the popular J-Spec. Through years of R@D and testing, Dynamic Lures finally released the new and innovative 4″ Z-Spec. Built for a multitude of species, this bait will give you an advantage with its super action and real-life profile.
These baits are outstanding low-budget lures that fish and perform at high-price. If seeking jerkbait alternatives, you should want a few of these in your boxes.
Both hard baits, along with others from the Dynamic Lures brand, have accounted for several big hauls of smallmouths, including my own personal bests.
I fish my J-Specs on spinning rods such as St. Croix 7-foot MHF Avid-X (AVS70MHF), and Avid Spinning 70MHF. For spinning reels, I recommend a size-30 model with oversize spool to help achieve long casts. I still fish with straight 8 to 10 lb. copolymer lines. On the baitcaster meanwhile, 10 lb. and 12 lb. Seaguar Red Label fluorocarbon is the ideal choice. Meanwhile for the Z-Spec, a casting setup will be necessary. I opt for the St. Croix Legend-X (XLC68MHF), and Mojo Bass Jig-N-Worm (MJC68MHF).
Early spring beckons jerkbaits from tackle trays on lakes all over the country. But in the northcountry, it’s an underutilized tactic. Largemouths and smallmouths alike find suspending jerkbaits difficult to resist as they stage to spawn. In May and June when smallmouth bass are staging for the spawn, I consider a suspending jerkbait the ultimate lure. It’s the first thing I turn to before anything else.
